HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point Rockers dropped a second consecutive game on this homestand, falling 7-3 to the Lexington Legends on Wednesday night at Truist Point.
The loss drops the Rockers 11 games behind the South Division leading Legends. The Rockers are now 19-28 in the second half and 48-62 on the year. Lexington improved to 30-17 and 56-54.
The Legends greeted High Point starter Justin Dunn (L, 0-2) with a pair of runs in the first. After walking the lead-off batter Xane Washington, P.J. Hilson hit a two-run homer to left to stake Lexington to a 2-0 lead.
Lexington grew its lead to 4-0 with a pair of runs in the third as Patrick Sanchez and P.J. Hilson each delivered RBI singles. Catcher Jerry Huntzinger doubled in the fourth, stole third and scored on a Rockers error as the Legends took a 5-0 advantage.
High Point tallied its first run in the fifth following three straight singles from Chris Brady, Ryan McCarthy and Ty Hubbard. Colin Davis lifted a sac fly to right to plate Brady and make it a 5-1 game.
Lexington made it a 7-1 contest when Curtis Terry hit a two-run homer in the sixth.
The Rockers cut the deficit to 7-2 in the sixth when Ethan Skender doubled and scored on a single by Quincy Nieporte. They added a run in the ninth on an Aidan Brewer double and an RBI double from McCarthy.
Lexington reliever Meade Johnson (W, 1-0) earned the win with two innings of relief, allowing two hits and one run while striking out four. Dunn went 3.2 innings for the Rockers in the start, allowing six hits and five runs while walking one and striking out three.
Hubbard led the Rockers with three hits while McCarthy provided two safeties and an RBI. Thursday’s game three of the six-game series is scheduled for a 6:35 p.m. start at Truist Point. The Rockers will send RHP Yuhi Sako (7-10, 5.63) to the mound to face Lexington RHP Nic Laio (8-7, 5.16).
