Nick Green Tosses Gem, Dogs Steamroll Sioux Falls 10-1

It’s Nick Green’s world, and we’re all just living in it.

The Dogs’ starting pitcher threw a dominant 8.2 innings that included a season-high 10 strikeouts and four hits in the Dogs’ 10-1 victory against the Sioux Falls Canaries Friday night. Green’s 119 pitches are the most in a start by any Dogs pitcher this season.

His command was strong all game long, but especially with his power curve. The breaking ball continuously fooled Canaries hitters all night. His first strikeout came at the hands of Sioux Falls hitter Wyatt Ulrich to end the bottom of the first inning.

Green surrendered four scattered hits and wasn’t in trouble during his performance. He shut down the Canaries’ lineup in order in three innings Friday.

With a runner on second and two strikes in the bottom of the ninth, Green allowed a sharp single to shortstop Josh Altmann. Altmann attempted to make the tough throw to first to end the game but sailed the throw into the Sioux Falls dugout. The error by Altmann allowed Jabari Henry to score, which ended the shutout.

Pitching coach Stu Cliburn replaced Green following the error, as Green’s pitch count soared to nearly 120 pitches. Nolan LaMere closed out the game for the Dogs on four pitches.

The Dogs’ offense was nearly as dominant as Green’s performance.

Chicago was patient at the plate all night, including the bottom of the first when they took three free bases. Newcomer David Maberry smashed his first of two Impact Field RBI with a sacrifice fly to left field in the first.

The Dogs scored three more times in the second.

Both General McArthur IV and Cody Bohanek stole bases before being driven in by a Matt Bottcher double. Bottcher has been flaming hot the past two weeks and now leads the American Association with a .376 batting average.

The Dogs turned from patience to power in the back half of the ballgame. Ryan Lidge smashed a solo home run in the fifth inning – his fifth of the season. Luke Mangieri scorched a three-run blast in the frame to extend the lead to 8-0.

The Dogs totaled 11 hits in the masterful win, with every single hitter reaching at least once.

The Dogs look to continue momentum against the Canaries Saturday night. Elvis Night begins at 5 p.m. with the first pitch at 6 p.m.
