The Sussex County Miners defeated the Rockland Boulders 16-9 in the first of a seven inning double header at Clover Stadium.
At this point of the season every game counts. After Fridays game was postponed for weather, the Miners were eager to take on a division foe and it showed.
It didn’t take long for them to get on the board as a Hunter D’Amato sacrifice bunt brought in Edwin Mateo to make it top 1-0 in the top of the first.
New York took the lead in the third inning when Jason Agresti’s ground ball into the outfield was good to send Julian Boyd and Austin Dennis Home. Half way through the shortened game, the home team was in front.
Sussex County instantly responded in ground shaking fashion. In the top of the fourth, score nine runs including a seven run no out rally where multiple players scored scored in runs thanks to singles and doubles. With two outs, Keenan Taylor hit a double to add two more runs. It was now 10-2.
They’d continue their dominance in the fifth adding five more runs to their lead. They got it done thanks to a home run from Keenan O’Brien, a double by Keenan Taylor, and two singles from Mahki Backstrom and Dean Ferrara.
An attempt at a comeback was made at the bottom of the inning where the boulders scored six runs. Jason Agresti scored two on another ground ball single, Matt Polk brought in one on a Sac fly, Josh Leslie brought in another on a single, Jordan Sesar got an RBI walk, and an Austin Dennis RBI hit by pitch was the start of a potential rally.
Both teams scored a run in the sixth inning to add the finishing touches to the game. They’d go scoreless in the seventh and the final was 16-9.
Miners defeated the Boulders 7-6 in the second of the two game double header. The Miners need every win they can get at this point and a Saturday sweep at Rockland County’s Clover Stadium was just what they needed.
Just like in game one, Sussex County scored a run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Dean Ferrara was thrown out at first, giving Edwin Mateo the chance to reach home plate.
New York got on the board in the bottom of the second when a John Leslie triple made it 1-1. Matt Polk was on third base and was credited with the run when he successfully scored.
They’d take the lead an inning later when a Santino Rosso home run and a Matt Polk ground rule double made it 3-1. Just like they scored two runs in bottom of the third in the first game, they do the same in the second game.
It became a back and fourth ordeal as the Miners scored runs in return right away in the top of the fourth when Makhi Backstrom hit a line drive over the right field wall. It was the 50th home run of Backstrom’s career and the game was now tied at three.
A tie game was short lived as in the bottom of the inning the Boulders scored more runs to take back their lead. Santino Rosso reaching first on a fielders choice, Jason Agresti’s third RBI single of the series, and an Aaron Simmons pop out added three more and it was now 6-3.
The Miners weren’t done yet. A Keenan Taylor RBI single and Backstrom stealing home added two runs and even closer to tying the game.
Once again, a tie was short lived as the next inning a Hunter D’Amato sac-bunt brought in Haiden Walters, good for the tie. It was the second game in a row where D’Amato hit a sac-bunt for an RBI.
Finally, they’d take the lead in the top of the 7th when Kiko Romero hit a home run over the right field wall. Down 6-3, they come all the way back, scoring in four straight innings, and taking the second game of the double header from the Boulders.
As September approaches, the Miners needed to do well going forward, especially in this series. By beating the Boulders they get closer to .500. They will look to sweep tomorrow at Clover Stadium and hopefully start a rally that sends them to the playoffs.
