The Sussex County Miners (35-36) took down the Lake Erie Crushers (29-43), 10-1, on Sunday afternoon at Skylands Stadium. Miners starting pitcher Kellen Brothers (5-5) gave up a double in each of the first two innings, but kept the Crushers from scoring an early run. In the bottom of the second, Sussex County got to Lake Erie starter Justin Mays (0-2). Shortstop Evan Berkey’s RBI groundout put the hosts on
the board, and a sacrifice fly from catcher Keenan O’Brien put the Miners up 2-0. Brothers delivered another pair of scoreless innings, and the Sussex County offense built on the lead in the fourth. Third baseman Dean Ferrara knocked in a run with a double and O’Brien drove in two more with a single. Up 5-0 in the fifth, the same batters came through in the same ways: Ferrara doubled in a couple of runs and O’Brien singled in another two, giving the Miners a 9-0 cushion.
Sussex County took Brothers out for the seventh inning. Relief pitcher Matt Stil allowed the first Lake Erie run of the day, but a solo homer from first baseman Mahki Backstrom in the home half restored the nine-run advantage. Relievers Jacob Widener and Parker Primeaux locked down the 10-1 final score with a perfect eighth and ninth innings, respectively. Brothers produced a quality start, allowing no earned runs over six innings. The righty struck out eight, walked three, and allowed four hits. Ferrara went a perfect 4-4 with three runs batted in and two extra-base hits.
O’Brien and Backstrom were the other Miners with multiple hits. O’Brien set a personal season-high with five runs batted in, topping his three-RBI performance on Opening Day. Brothers was credited with the win, while Mays took the loss. The 35-36 Miners own the third-best record in the Atlantic East Division. Sussex County is the winner of its season series against Lake Erie, claiming victory in five of the six games.
