Late home runs power Dogs to 6-4 win, dealing Monarchs first loss in seven games

ROSEMONT, ILL. — The Chicago Dogs stormed back from a late 3-2 deficit to hand the Kansas City Monarchs their first loss in seven games Friday night at Impact Field, winning 6-4.

Luke Mangieri and Matt Bottcher both smashed seventh-inning home runs in a four-hit four-run inning that turned a 3-2 Monarchs lead into a 6-3 Dogs advantage. In spite of a Kansas City run plated in the top of the eighth, the Dogs closed strong, with Brian Schlitter holding down the fort for his fifth save.

The Dogs opened on top 2-0 after scoring in the first on a Josh Altmann ground ball that plated Jesus Lujano and in the fourth on a Mangieri RBI double.

Meanwhile, starter Bryan Warzek blazed through the top-ranked Monarchs lineup in the first three innings, allowing no runs and striking out four batters. He gave up just one hit, a softly hit infield single by Micker Adolfo in the third.

In relief, Nolan LeMere made his Dogs debut and struck out three batters but allowed a three-run Adolfo home run to center in the fifth, giving Kansas City a 3-2 lead.

Mangieri and Bottcher’s home runs — plus a Ben Livorsi RBI double — then turned the tide for the eventual winning Dogs, who snapped an 11 losses-in-12-games stretch.

Joe Cavallaro, who dealt 2.2 shutdown innings, allowing just one unearned run, picked up the win. Jordan Martinson, the Monarchs’ man on the mound in the red-hot home half of the seventh, was dealt the loss. Martinson was in relief of Dalton Moats, Kansas City’s starter. Moats pitched five innings and allowed two runs on four hits.

The win moves the Dogs to 16-15 and sets up a possible series win Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. for game two. Tyler Palm will start for the Dogs.
