Miners Game At Joliet Friday Suspended, Doubleheader Saturday

Marion, Ill. (July 21, 2017) – The Southern Illinois Miners’ game at Joliet on Friday night was suspended due to heavy rain that came through the area with the Miners leading the Slammers 2-1 in the top of the third inning. It will be picked up on Saturday night beginning in the top of the third with the Miners batting at 5:00 p.m. and will be played out to its nine-inning conclusion. The Miners and Slammers will then play a seven-inning contest as part of a doubleheader that will begin approximately 30 minutes after the suspended game finishes. Southern Illinois got on the board first with three doubles in the top of the second inning, including back-to-back RBI hits by Ben Moore and Anthony Critelli against Slammers starter Luis Cruz to take a 2-0 lead. After Zach Cooper struck out the side in the first, the Slammers struck for a run in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Rock Shoulders to make it 2-1. Cooper minimized the damage, however, striking out Josh Merrigan with two runners on base to end the threat before the rains came and suspended the contest.
