Early Errors Doom Miners In Game One Versus The Jackals

The New Jersey Jackals defeated the Sussex County Miners 6-2 Friday night at Skylands Stadium. It was the first of a crucial three game set.

With the postseason getting closer and closer as days go by, every game is considered a playoff game for Sussex County, who was only three behind the final playoff spot coming into today. They will rely on starting pitcher Kellen Brothers to get the job done against Sonny Fauci.

Before the game began Miners fans were treated to a ceremonial first pitch thrown by New York Giants superfan, License Plate Guy. Accompanied by content creator, Bobby Skinner, whose podcast “Giants Nation Show” is proudly sponsored by the Miners, the duo got the crowd going for what was an ultra important game.

New Jersey was scoring right away, bringing in four in the top of the first. An error on a ball hit by Alvaro Gonzalez brought in David Glancey for the first run. It led to an RBI single in the next at bat from Felix Stevens who made it 2-0. More mistakes put more runners on base. After more errors, DeAmez Ross brought in another two. It wasn’t even the bottom of the first inning yet and the score was already 4-0 and a steep hill for the home team.

The Miners responded soon after in the bottom of the second when Keenan O’Brien smacked a RBI double into right field, bringing in Keenan Taylor and Kiko Romero. O’Brien’s 22nd and 23rd runs batted in on the season made it a two run game with plenty of time left.

In the top of the fourth the Jackals continued to add to their lead, now at three. Martin Figueroa’s sac-fly to center field gave them their fifth run, now up 5-2. Figueroa wouldn’t stop there as a single in the bottom of the ninth brought in another run and the second he scored on his former team.

Now down by grand slam with three outs to go, Sussex County needed the ultimate rally if they wanted to steal one. It didn’t come and they’d go on to lose a tough one 6-2.

Kellen Brothers continued his strides towards breaking the Miners single season strikeout record and ended up with a stellar performance. Striking out 11 Jackals on route to a seven inning quality start with three earned runs his strikeouts totalling 102 just needing 19 to tie John Baker’s 2022 mark of 121.

Now four games back from the Division leaders Jackals, the next two are even more important then they already are. They will be in a much better position if they beat them the rest of the weekend.
