The Chicago Dogs dropped both games of their doubleheader against the Lincoln Saltdogs at Haymarket Park on Saturday. Chicago lost the first game 5-4, and the second, 10-1.
The first leg of the doubleheader was a back-and-forth contest that saw the Dogs strike first with a two-run first inning thanks to RBIs from Ethan Wilder and Jacob Maiben. Lincoln tied the game at two apiece in the bottom of the first on an RBI double by Cary Arbolida. Gio DiGiacomo reclaimed the lead for Chicago in the top of the second on an RBI sacrifice fly that drove in Tyreque Reed. Lincoln countered once again in the bottom of the third when Jairo Pomares tied the game at three apiece on an RBI double that scored Cam Phelts. Jacob Maiben took the lead back for the Dogs in the top of the seventh on an RBI single that drove in his brother, Derek. The Saltdogs answered once again in the bottom of the seventh when Phelts drove in Calyn Halvorson to send the game into extra innings. Connor Bagnieski drove in the game-winning run for the second straight game in the bottom of the eighth to give Lincoln a 5-4 victory.
The second game was significantly less competitive than the first. Chicago’s starter, Grant Cherry, gave up seven earned runs in 2.2 innings, leaving Chicago facing a seven-run deficit in the bottom of the third. Dogs reliever JC Flowers walked in another run in the bottom of the third to make the score 8-0. After Lincoln added two more runs to their total, the Dogs got on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh when DiGiacomo drove in Reed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to nine. This would not be enough, however, as the Saltdogs took the second game 10-1.
The Dogs will look to avoid the series sweep on Sunday, June 28. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
