Dogs’ Offense Falters in First Shutout of the Season

ROSEMONT, ILL. – The Milwaukee Milkmen defeated the Chicago Dogs on Saturday night, 3-0. It’s the first time the Dogs have been shut out and lost consecutive games this season. It’s also the first series the team has dropped through 20 games.

Milwaukee starting pitcher Christian Young dominated through six innings, allowing three scattered hits and striking out seven.

The Milwaukee bullpen shut the door the final three innings giving up two hits.

Milwaukee’s Cam Balego opened scoring with a second inning home run — his second long ball of the series. Milwaukee scored its final two runs in the top of the third — two RBI singles by Aaron Hill and Gabriel Cancel.

Dogs starter Ryan O’Reilly was smooth through seven innings permitting six hits, three earned runs and five strikeouts. Saturday’s start was the best of the season for O’Reilly. His seven innings were the highest total this season, and he limited free bases against Milwaukee. O’Reilly had issued 13 walks in his previous three starts.

O’Reilly’s start is a strong sign for a complete and deep Dogs’ pitching staff that has four top-25 pitchers in ERA. The Dogs’ rotational length has been a big reason for a league-leading 14-6 record.

Joe Cavallaro and Brian Schlitter each pitched an inning in relief. Both allowed one hit and zero runs out of the bullpen.

Nick Heath corked a first inning single to right field. Heath was thrown out while trying to steal second and injured on the play. Taylor Jackson replaced Heath in the lineup and went 0-3 with a strikeout.

Jesus Lujano led the way with two hits for the Dogs. Matt Bottcher and Josh Altmann each smacked singles in the loss, as well.

The Dogs end their six-game homestand Sunday afternoon with catch on the field and autographs pregame. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
