FIGUEROA, KUROKAWA NAMED LEAGUE’S TOP ROOKIES

Kurokawa photo: Marc Lafleur / Ottawa Champions Figueroa photo: Torri Koppenaal / Sussex County Miners Durham, N.C. — Sussex County Miners 3B Martin Figueroa and Ottawa Champions RHP Jordan Kurokawa have been named the Can-Am League’s Rookie of the Year and Rookie Pitcher of the Year, respectively, as chosen by league managers and media members. Figueroa got off to a sizzling start on the season and was named the league’s Player of the Month for June, hitting .422 with 23 RBI in the month. Overall, the Elizabeth, N.J., native is currently third in the league with a .328 average, leads the Can-Am with a .445 on-base percentage, and is tied for first with six triples to go along with 47 RBI and 19 stolen bases. 2018 marks Figueroa’s second professional season, having spent 2017 in the Houston Astros organization with rookie-level Greeneville of the Appalachian League. He was a 32nd-round choice of the Astros in the 2017 draft out of the University of Rhode Island. Figueroa is the second Rookie of the Year in Miners’ history, following Johnny Bladel, 2015’s winner.
