SIOUX CITY’S SERMO TAKES HOME PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARD

MOORHEAD, MN- The American Association announced Thursday that Sioux City Explorers’ INF Jose Sermo has been named Player of the Year. Sermo scorched American Association pitchers in 2018, hitting .310 while driving in a league-leading 81 RBIs and tying for the second most home runs in the league with 22. The Puerto Rico native also scored the third most runs in the league (76) and stole the ninth most bases (22) while helping the Explorers win the most games in the American Association. Sermo began his professional career in 2012 after being drafted in the 35th round of the MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers. The switch-hitter spent three seasons in the Brewers’ organization before making his first stop in the American Association with the Gary SouthShore RailCats in 2015. Sermo spent parts of 2016 and 2017 in the Boston Red Sox organization before signing with the Winnipeg Goldeyes before the 2018 season. The 27-year-old played four games with the Goldeyes before getting released and signing with Sioux City.
