UTICA, Mich. – The Westside Woolly Mammoths (17-18) shook off an early deficit and used timely hitting, aggressive base running, and strong pitching to earn a 5–2 win over the Eastside Diamond Hoppers (21-13) on Thursday night at Jimmy John’s Field.
The Hoppers jumped out to a quick 2–0 lead in the first inning when Gio Ferraro lined an RBI single to score Myles Beale, followed by Andrew Bergeron’s run-scoring knock. But from there, the Mammoths’ pitching staff clamped down.
Westside answered immediately in the second inning, loading the bases with no outs before Jose Cedeno worked a walk to bring in a run. Mark Kattula followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game 2–2. In the third, Tommy Stevenson ripped an RBI double to give the Mammoths a lead they would not relinquish.
The Mammoths tacked on insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings — Dante Morton’s single in the seventh plated Sebastian Trinidad, and Kattula’s RBI groundout in the eighth brought home Cedeno to make it 5–2.
On the mound, Brandon Scott (1–0) was dominant in his first win of the season, tossing 5.0 scoreless innings with eight strikeouts and no earned runs. Dillon Chapa worked three shutout frames in relief before Ryan DuSang closed the door in the ninth for his second save.
