UTICA, Mich. – The Westside Woolly Mammoths (22-18) used timely hitting and strong pitching to secure a 3–1 victory over the Eastside Diamond Hoppers (22-17) in Game 2 of Saturday’s doubleheader at Jimmy John’s Field.
The Mammoths broke through in the third inning when Derek Wood tripled and came home on a Sebastian Trinidad RBI single. Later in the frame, Dante Morton’s RBI single plated Trinidad to make it 2–0. After the Hoppers answered with a run in the bottom half on Bailey Martin’s RBI single, the Mammoths added insurance in the fourth when Timo Aracena drove in Tommy Stevenson to push the lead to 3–1.
That was all the support starting pitcher Guillermo Garcia Jr. needed. The right-hander improved to 5–0 on the season, working 4.0 innings while allowing just one run on six hits and striking out five without issuing a walk. The Mammoths bullpen locked it down from there, as David Craig and Ryan DuSang combined for three scoreless frames. DuSang earned his fifth save of the year.
The Hoppers had their chances, collecting seven hits on the night, including multi-hit games from Andrew Bergeron and Jorge Gonzalez, but could not capitalize late. Starting pitcher Pierce Banks (7–2) was tagged with the loss despite striking out five in 4.0 innings of work.
