UTICA, Mich. – It was a back-and-forth battle at Jimmy John’s Field as the Utica Unicorns (7-7) and Westside Woolly Mammoths (5-7) ended Game 1 of their Saturday doubleheader in a 4-4 tie at the end of 6-innings. The Mammoths took the victory in sudden victory, choosing to play defense and not allowing the Unicorns to score.
The Unicorns struck first in the third inning, sparked by Kyle Williams’ leadoff single and Austin Ochoa’s patient plate appearance. Jude Drzemiecki and Chris Schoeller came through with RBI hits to push Utica ahead 2-0. The Mammoths answered quickly, capitalizing on an error and a clutch RBI single from Adam Haidermota to even the score.
Utica regained the lead in the fifth when Ochoa doubled and later scored on another single by Drzemiecki. They added one more in the sixth thanks to a pinch-hit double by Andrew Valdez and an RBI knock from Williams. But the Mammoths weren’t done yet — Sebastian Trinidad delivered a two-run single in the bottom half of the sixth to tie it again at 4-4.
Both bullpens held firm in the seventh, and with time constraints in place, the game concluded in a tie.
