SABR is the Society for American Baseball Research, and it has regional chapters across the United States. About two weeks ago, a Northeast regional chapter’s YouTube channel posted this video interviewing two veteran players – “shooting stars” of the 2025 Pecos League, a player/coach and coach
Here is the description from this video:
Join us for an interesting discussion about a professional baseball circuit you’ve more than likely heard very little about! The Pecos League of Professional Baseball Clubs is an independent professional baseball league headquartered in Houston, which operates in cities in desert mountain regions throughout California, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Texas. The league plays in cities that do not have Major League Baseball or Minor League Baseball teams and is not affiliated with either. Two members of the league will be on hand to offer their stories and experiences in the league over the past couple of years. SABR Member Andrew Tuetken is a Rhode Island-based author, history teacher, professional baseball player and coach, known for writing books on Rhode Island baseball and UMass Athletics. He is the author of the book Murals of McCoy and presented his book to our chapter on SABR Day in 2024. SABR Member Evan Katz Evan Katz’s pro baseball career began at age 61 when he pitched for the White Sands Pupfish of the Pecos League in 2017. When euphoria subsided and his infinity ERA began to sting, Evan returned to the Pecos League at age 67. With the Austin Weirdos he became one of the oldest pitchers to start a minor league game and lowered his ERA to 29.25. After an aborted stint as pitching coach with the Roswell Invaders in 2024, Evan returned to the Pecos League in 2025 as bullpen coach of the North Platte 80s. Evan also hosts the website “Baseball by the Sea Media” which includes SABR biographies and game stories, plus links to the two-season podcast co-hosted with Bruce McClure, “Baseball’s Last Frontier: Stories from the Pecos League.” SABR Director Bruce McClure is founder & chair of the Clyde Sukeforth Chapter (ME/NH), a membership ambassador and co-hosted Baseball’s Last Frontier: Stories from the Pecos League for two years. His professional baseball career never got off the ground, but has had a passion for the game since he was a young boy. He resides in New London, NH.
The two players aren’t your typical independent league players. You may discover more about them here:
