Sussex County fell to Quebec in its first of six straight games this week
The Sussex County Miners had multiple opportunities to break away last week, and position themselves for a playoff run. After losing two out of three to the Jackals last weekend, the Miners now have a steeper hill to climb for mid-September baseball. Quebec is one of the best teams in the entire league, and tonight’s contest showed why. A 9-8 victory for the Capitales was delivered by way of the walk off.
A four run first inning for Quebec was only the start of one of the most lopsided games all season for Sussex County. The Miners offense would go on to score two in the top of the second, powered by a Keenan Taylor homer. However, Starting Pitcher Tyler Thornton gave up three more in the bottom frame. The righty would only last one more inning until Jackson Balzan came in for the middle three. A scoreless outing for the southpaw set up the bats with much needed momentum.
Four runs came in innings four and five, but the power show came in the seventh. Edwin Mateo and Gabriel Maciel had back-to-back bombs to put the Miners up 8-7 at the time. One of the most exciting moments of the year, unfortunately, was shattered just a few innings later.
Three pitchers were on the mound for the final two innings. Jacob Widener was responsible for the tying run, before Parker Primeaux saved Sussex County from another pickle on the basepath. John Perozzi came in to try to hold the game at eight until extras, but was unsuccessful. The set up man only recorded one out in the bottom of the ninth, before Chavez Young hit a line drive to left field to win the game for Quebec.
Thankfully, Sussex County has five more chances to take down Quebec this week. Two more will be played in Canada, and this weekend’s series will be hosted at Skylands Stadium. Tomorrow’s first pitch is scheduled for 6:50 PM. Watch the Miners from home on HomeTeam Network, or listen in for free through the radio on the Miners Broadcast Network, powered by Mixlr.
