Between the heat and the late-game rain, the Dogs and Goldeyes were unable to complete their July 3rd game, as Chicago was down 8-2 in the bottom of the ninth inning when the rain struck at Impact Field yet again.
The Dogs offense struggled in similar fashion to the evening before, putting pressure on the Winnipeg starter Luke Boyd early, but they were unable to capitalize on runners in scoring position. Giovanni DiGiacomo swatted his eighth home run of the season in the bottom of the first, smoking it off the batter’s eye. Aaron Altherr ripped a single into left in the bottom of the sixth, driving in Daniel Harris, but that was all the offense Chicago would get.
Kelvin Pilot made his second start for the Dogs, tossing four innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits and three walks, striking out two. Grant Cherry came in relief, allowing just one run on two hits, walking one and striking out two. Will Merriot gave up four runs in his inning and a third of work. The only positive pitching performance of the evening was from JC Flowers, who threw an inning and two thirds of scoreless baseball, striking out two and allowing one hit.
The Dogs will continue the July Fourth festivities tomorrow evening against Winnipeg at 6:30pm, with Steven Lacey getting the start for Chicago. All Chicago Dogs games can be streamed for free on aabaseball.tv.
