
Lincoln, Nebraska- A long day of baseball ended in a positive note, Saturday, as the Lincoln Saltdogs claimed two victories over the Sioux Falls Canaries, at Haymarket Park. Concluding a suspended game from Friday night, Lincoln came back from a pair of late inning deficits and walked off with an 11-10, ten inning victory. Then, in the regularly scheduled Saturday night game, which was condensed to seven innings, the Saltdogs recorded an 11-3 win, and have claimed the first two games of the three-game series.
Game 1:
Picking up where Friday night’s game was suspended, Lincoln trailed Sioux Falls, 7-5, after the end of the fourth inning. The Saltdogs cut the Sioux Falls lead in half, in the bottom of the sixth. Facing Canaries reliever Kody Dalen, Jairo Pomares reached on a fielder’s choice, with one out. Then, three consecutive walks to Tanner O’ Tremba, Cael Chatham, and Jack Dragum, drove in Pomares, to make it 7-6.
The Saltdogs tied the score in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Sioux Falls reliever Will Levine, Tanner O’ Tremba reached on a fielder’s choice. Then, Cael Chatham drew a walk. Two batters later, Paul Myro was hit by a pitch, to load the bases. The Canies went to the bullpen and brought in Charlie Hasty, to pitch. The next batter, Jacob Morrow, drew a walk, scoring O’ Tremba, to tie the game at 7-7.
Sioux Falls recaptured the lead, quickly, in the top of the ninth. Facing Lincoln reliever Tyler Stasiowski, Joe Vos hit a solo home run, to right field, putting the Canaries in front, 8-7.
In the bottom of the ninth, Lincoln delivered to tie the game. With one out, Jake Hjelle homered off Canaries reliever Adam Diedrich, to tie the game at 8-8.
The contest would go extra innings. In the top of the tenth, with Sioux Falls’ TJ Racherbaumer the placed runner at second, a wild pitch advanced Racherbaumer to third. Then, Trevor Auchenbach reached on a throwing error by Tyler Stasiowski, scoring Racherbaumer, to make it a 9-8, Sioux Falls lead. A Chris Kwitzer sacrifice bunt advanced Auchenbach to third base. Then, Mason Minzey hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Auchenbach, to make it a 10-8 Sioux Falls lead.
In the bottom of the tenth, Tanner O’ Tremba was the placed runner at second. Two batter later, Jack Dragum singled, scoring O’ Tremba, to make it 10-9. The Saltdogs brought Cary Arbolida in to run for Dragum. Paul Myro hit a dribbler in front of the plate and was thrown out at first, for the second out of the inning, as Arbolida advanced to second. Jacob Morrow drew a walk. Then, Nick Shumpert singled, scoring Arbolida, to tie the game at 10-10, and advancing Morrow to second. The next batter, Connor Bagnieski hit a single to shallow center field, scoring Morrow, and Lincoln won, in walk-off fashion, 11-10.
Lincoln scored eleven runs, off sixteen hits, committed one error, and stranded fifteen base runners. Sioux Falls had ten runs, off twelve hits, with no errors, and left seven runners on base.
Saltdogs’ starter Haden Erbe pitched 3.2 innings, giving up four runs, off six hits, struck out five, and walked four. Jack Hill pitched 0.1 inning, yielding one run, off two hits. Harold Cortijo pitched 2.1 innings, struck out three, and walked one. David Shaw worked 1.1 innings, with one strikeout. Tyler Stasiowski (1-1) earned the win, pitching 2.0 innings, giving up three runs, off three hits, and struck out two.
Sioux Falls starter Garrett Martin pitched 4.0 innings, giving up five runs, off ten hits, struck out six, and walked three. Kody Dalen pitched 1.2 innings, yielding one run, struck out two, and walked four. Spencer Bauer pitched 1.1 innings and gave up one hit. Will Levine worked 0.2 innings, surrendering one run, off one hit, and walked one. Charlie Hasty threw 2.0 innings, giving up one run, off one hit, and walked one. Adam Diedrich (0-1) took the loss, pitching 0.2 innings, yielding three runs, off three hits, and walked one.
Offensively for Lincoln, Nick Shumpert was 4-for-7 with an RBI. Connor Bagnieski went 1-for-4 with two runs batted in, including the walk-off winning hit. Jake Hjelle was 2-for-5 with a solo home run and drove in two. Jairo Pomares and Tanner O’ Tremba both were 2-for-5 with an RBI, each. Jack Dragum was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. Jacob Morrow went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
For the Canaries, Joe Vos was 1-for-4 with a solo home run, and two runs batted in. Anthony Hall was 3-for-5 with a solo home run, and two RBIs. Josh Rehwaldt went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run. Michael Curialle went 2-for-4.
Game 2:
In the condensed seven inning game, Saturday, Lincoln used the long ball early to take a lead, which they would not relinquish, in an 11-3 victory.
In the bottom of the first, facing Sioux Falls starter Derek Craft, Cary Arbolida reached on a one-out single. Then, Jake Hjelle singled. Jairo Pomares drew a walk, to load the bases. Then, Tanner O’ Tremba hit a grand slam home run to left field, to put Lincoln ahead, 4-0.
The Saltdogs added a run in the bottom of the second. Paul Myro led off with a single, then stole second. Two batters later, Nick Shumpert singled, scoring Myro, to make it a 5-0 Lincoln lead.
The Canaries got a run back in the top of the third. Facing Lincoln starter Graham Edwards, Scott Combs and Mason Minzey drew back-to-back walks. After two strikeouts, Anthony Sharkas singled, scoring Combs, to make it 5-1.
Lincoln put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fourth. Paul Myro led off with a walk, then stole second base. Three batters later, Cary Arbolida walked. Then, Jake Hjelle hit a three-run home run to left field, making the score, 8-1.
Sioux Falls plated two runs in the top of the fifth. With one out, Anthony Hall walked. Two batters later, Josh Rehwaldt hit a two-run home run to right field, making the score, 8-3.
The Saltdogs put the finishing touches on the scoring in the bottom of the fifth. Calyn Halvorson led off with a walk. Paul Myro did the same. Griffin Everitt reached on a fielder’s choice. Then, Nick Shumpert singled, scoring Halvorson, to make it 9-3. The next batter, Cary Arbolida, hit a two-rbi double, to make the score 11-3, which would end up being the final score.
Lincoln (7-14) scored eleven runs, off ten hits, with no errors, and stranded four base runners. Sioux Falls plated three runs, off seven hits, had no errors, and left six runners on base.
Saltdogs starting pitcher Graham Edwards (1-1) earned the win, pitching 5.0 innings, giving up three runs, off six hits, struck out seven, and walked three. Gabriel Jaramillo pitched a clean sixth inning. Jeferson Figueroa pitched 1.0 inning and gave up one hit.
Sioux Falls starter Derek Craft (1-2) took the loss, pitching 3.2 innings, giving up eight runs, off nine hits, struck out three, and walked three. Dyson Johnson pitched 1.0 inning, gave up three runs, off two hits, and walked two. Trevor Auchenbach pitched a perfect 1.1 innings.
Offensively for Lincoln, Nick Shumpert was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Cary Arbolida went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs. Jake Hjelle was 2-for-3 with a three-run home run. Tanner O’ Tremba was 2-for-4 with a grand slam home run.
For the Canaries, Anthony Sharkas was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Josh Rehwaldt went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run. Mike Hart went 2-for-3.
The final game of the series is Sunday afternoon. LHP Ryan Rembisz (0-3, 4.96 ERA) will pitch for Lincoln. RHP Chase Gearing (2-1, 3.80 ERA) will be on the mound for the Canaries.
