Independent baseball, as we know it today, began in the summer of 1993.  Here is a fun trivia question:  Name the original two leagues and the teams in them:

  • Northern League:  Duluth-Superior Dukes, Rochester Aces, Saint Paul Saints, Sioux City Explorers, Sioux Falls Canaries, Thunder Bay Whiskey Jacks
  • Frontier League: Chillicothe Paints, Kentucky Rifles, Lancaster Scouts, Ohio Valley Redcoats, Portsmouth Explorers, Tri-State Tomahawks (folded mid-season), West Virginia Coal Sox (folded mid-season), Zanesville Greys
