Similar to other organizations, Pittsburgh trimmed 15 players from its minor league system, but one who escaped the axe was Johnny Hellweg, who was picked up from the New Jersey Jackals with only about two weeks remaining in the season and helped Double-A Altoona win the Eastern League title. Just turned 29, the 6-foot-7 righty, who spent the last two months of ’16 and most of ’17 sharpening his skills with the Jackals. He had 19 saves this season to go with a 2-3 record and 3.79 ERA. Presumably, he will get a good look next spring as he tries to return to the majors.
