Washington Nationals RHP Max Scherzer earned his third Cy Young Award on Wednesday. Scherzer went 16-6 with a 2.51 ERA over 200 2/3 innings, while recording league bests in strikeouts (268), WHIP (0.90) and hits allowed per nine innings (5.7). The WHIP and hits-per-nine marks were career bests for Scherzer, as was his rate of 12 strikeouts per nine innings. Scherzer began his professional career in the American Association in 2007 with the Fort Worth Cats. One season later, he was in the majors with the Arizona Diamondbacks, beginning a dominant major-league career. The St. Louis native is one of 11 league alumni to have pitched in the majors in 2017, and one of 24 to reach the bigs in league history. Read the full release from Major League Baseball.
