The situation in El Paso, Texas regarding the financing of a new downtown stadium to bring the Triple-A Tucson Padres to El Paso is still subject to a vote. Many people in the area have high emotions on the subject, most of all the El Paso Diablos who play in the American Association. Should the Padres move the team to El Paso by 2014, the business model of the Diablos would be suspect at best and detrimental at worst.
The Padres moving to Tucson ultimately killed the likelihood of a successful Golden League franchise as it would have been difficult to run two minor league teams in the same market. The Toros drew well during their latter years, as the Diablos currently do at the gate at Cohen Stadium. There are other factors at play, but if the Padres move the team then it would be the second city in 5 years where their Triple-A franchise kills a relatively successful independent league team.
