Ending a wild pre-season of league office staff shuffling, the last-minute creation of two travel/neutral site teams, and nearly not playing due to legal opposition from local neighborhood association members, the San Rafael Pacifics won the Northern Division championship for the 2012 North American League season. They beat the Na Koa Ikaika Maui (Maui Strong Warriors) in the third game of a best-of-3 series hosted in San Rafael, CA.
At this time there does not appear to be any plans to have the Pacifics play the champions from the United League division of the NAL, which has all of its teams in Texas. Therefore, the two divisions will have separate champions and will be reflected as such on this site’s list of historical independent baseball league championship winning teams since 1993. Just last week, the Pacifics made national news when they signed former MLB pitcher Bill “The Spaceman” Lee to a one-night contract. He started and pitched a complete game victory; and, in doing so, he became the oldest man to earn a win as a starter in a pro baseball game.
