The Rockford RiverHawks ownership believed that a team name change was in order, so it had a name-the-team contest and accepted name suggestions from its fans in the community. The team now will be known as the Rockford Aviators, and they still will play in the Frontier League in the same stadium. The team president said the name was chosen to pay tribute to the area’s history with the aviation industry.

The only other team in independent baseball history with the same nickname was the Coastal Bend Aviators which played in the Central League and American Association. Other proposed independent teams were to be called the Aviators but they never played a regular season game.
