The Rockford Riverhawks (Frontier League) made news in the baseball press in recent days with the announcement that players are now wearing a MaxMuscle logo on the jerseys as a straight sponsorship deal.  Ballpark Digest posted a photo of the team with players wearing the sponsored jerseys:

According to the article, the team’s sponsored jerseys are a first in pro baseball as the writers are not aware of any team which has sold the jersey space as a direct sale, rather than as a part of an overall package.  The Riverhawks’ corporate partners page simply lists MaxMuscle as a partner along with their other sponsors:

Of interest, the jerseys shown in the Riverhawks photos on the team’s Facebook page which have been posted through today’s mention do not have the sponsor logo on the back of the jerseys.  This does not mean that they did not exist to begin the season, but simply the photos posted did not have the sponsor.

With other major sports teams bearing sponsor logos, feel free to leave your opinion on whether this is a worthy trend or if there are other new revenue streams which are preferable to initiate before selling jersey space.
