Possibile For Nogales To Get AWBL Team

On February 6 the city of Nogales appeared to reject the idea of a pro baseball team coming back to the area.  The American West Baseball League (AWBL) wants to put a team in Nogales, and a recent meeting may have put the possibility back on track:

Should this happen it would give the AWBL a much-needed piece of good news as it has had some distinct drawbacks in the previous few months.  The league announced that it would put a team in Las Cruces, New Mexico.  This would replace the previous Las Cruces Vaqueros team which played in the Continental Baseball League (2010) and the Pecos League (2011-2012).  The other teams announced for the AWBL include the North County Canons (San Diego area) and either the Fullerton Flyers or the Long Beach Splash.  Once all of this is confirmed then it will be posted on this site.

Many recent fans of independent baseball may not know that there was a pro team in Nogales 10 years ago.  The Arizona-Mexico League played about 3 weeks of the 2003 season before suspending operations.  The team which was in Nogales was called the Nogales Charros.  Here is more information on that team:

  1. This link only took me to the article title…not a story. Try again?

And there still hasn’t been any confirmation posted about whether Long Beach and Fullerton will play this year. Another last minute, made up league? Sounds like they should wait for another year, or start late and play into the fall. Just skip going against weekend football. (Well, I can dream anyway. That would corner the market, except for the WS and the AFL.)
