Jose and Ozzie Canseco To Play And Coach The Yuma Scorpions

The North American League announced a few things yesterday:

Both Jose Canseco, and his twin brother Ozzie, will be the manager/bench coach (respectively) for the Yuma Scorpions.  Also, former Laredo Broncos GM Jose Melendez will be the general manager for the Scorpions.  Jose played for the Laredo Broncos last year when both were in the United League.  Ozzie had one game for the Broncos as well.

This will be either Canseco’s first foray into coaching or managing at the professional level.  Both Cansecos have several years of experience playing in the independent leagues.

While this may help attendance with the Scorpions, there are problems which this move hopefully can sort out.  Last year the team had significant challenges with attendance as well as the owner failing his obligations for the team; and the team became the ward of the league.  The ownership also was attempted to be sold to a local investor, but he had trouble gathering support from local sponsors.

Hopefully these challenges can be mitigated by the announcement and that the influx of awareness will give the team and the players sustainability for the 2011 season.  The Scorpions are now owned by Diamond Sports & Entertainment, which is the parent company of the Golden League (now the NAL):  http://www.oursportscentral.com/services/releases/?id=4105125
