City Of El Paso Approves Ballpark For Triple-A Team

The Mayor of the City of El Paso (Texas) approved the plan, saying he would not veto it, to allow the ownership group (who is going to purchase of the Tucson Padres) to move the team to El Paso.  The city will be financing the majority of the costs for the new downtown ballpark, with the intention that the stadium will be ready for play at the beginning of the 2014 season.  His comments about the rather volatile situation can be found in this article:

How this affects the El Paso Diablos (American Association) team is still to be determined.  They play outside of downtown El Paso at Cohen Stadium, currently owned by the city.  The city has a clause where only one pro team can play in a city-owned facility after the current lease is up.  How this affects the 2013 American Association season is still unknown

Likely the Diablos, should they wish to operate in the region in 2014, would have to do any of the following:

  • purchase Cohen Stadium from the city and continue to operate in the American Association
  • move the team to another stadium in the region and continue to operate in the AA
  • build a new stadium somewhere in the region and continue to operate in the AA
  • move the team to another city which operates independent baseball in the region, either the Pecos League or the upstart American West Baseball League

Once the Diablos’ official course of action is confirmed then it will be posted on this site.
