There are news reports about the potential to bring professional baseball back to Montreal, with the Can-Am League’s commissioner (Miles Wolff) being quoted in this recent New York Times article:
What is interesting is that Montreal is the largest North American city without any form of pro baseball: Major League, minor league, or independent league. The article discusses the visa problems which many pro teams have faced in Canada, particularly the province of Quebec. In addition, it mentions that there is no suitable stadium to even retrofit. The article then not-so-subtly bashes the independent league teams in Western Canada of Edmonton and Calgary (no mention of Victoria, BC).
Another glaring omission is that Montreal, in fact, did have professional baseball since the Expos left the city. In 2003, the Canadian Baseball League had a team called the Montreal Royales (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_Baseball_League). The league folded midway through its only season, but independent baseball did play in Montreal within the last decade.
